InstituteQ university partners launch national cross-institutional studies agreement

Following InstituteQ’s expansion in 2025, students in eligible degree programmes at InstituteQ university partner institutions will be able to register for quantum-related courses organized by other participating institutions as part of a new cross-institutional study agreement.

This new study agreement, “QuantNet”, represents a first step toward expanding and harmonizing quantum science and technology education across Finland through increased collaboration between the institutions.

The agreement includes advanced-level courses (Master’s and doctoral level) that can be completed online, enabling students across Finland to take them regardless of location. Next fall, four courses offered by the University of Helsinki will be available: Quantum Computing and Quantum Information A & B and Open Quantum Systems I & II. The registration period for the courses is in August.

“During the next academic year, we will gather experiences and best practices for organizing this kind of collaboration in online quantum education. After this pilot stage, the aim is to expand the course offering,” says EduQ operations lead Kimmo Tuominen. “We hope that academic mentors and supervisors will encourage their students to explore the available opportunities and supplement their knowledge and skills through these courses.”

InstituteQ Director Jukka Pekola is pleased to see educational collaboration in quantum science and technology expanding across the country. “As a small nation with limited resources for educating future talent, it is not efficient for each institution to independently organize local training in overlapping fields. We all benefit from coordinated efforts to make the most of each institution’s strengths and areas of expertise,” says Pekola.

Alongside the InstituteQ-wide QuantNet agreement, the QuantEd agreement between the University of Helsinki and Aalto University is still active. This more local collaboration also includes training that requires on-campus attendance.

Further information on the agreements is available on the cross-institutional studies page.
