From Paolo: What will your talk discuss?
It is part and parcel of the reductionistic approach of modern science to explain the behavior of complex systems in terms of their simpler constituents, e.g. particles, their properties and their mutual interactions. However, such a division into simpler components is by no means unique as it depends on the questions one is trying to address, the experimental limitations of the observer, and the physical regime one is operating in.
Mereology is the theory of parthood relations: the relations of part to whole and the relations of part to part within a whole. In this talk we shall try taking some steps towards an information-theoretic and operational framework for quantum mereology.
