On September 9th during the Finnish Quantum Days, InstituteQ and the Finnish Quantum Flagship hosted a 3 Minute Thesis competition. During the competition, we heard 8 compelling presentations from a group of finalists from across the country. The list of presenters and their presentation topics were:
🥇 Rahinatou Yuh Njah epouse Nchiwo (Winner) – Aalto University
"Cryptanalysis of polynomial learning with errors"
🥈 Valter Uotila (Runner-up) – University of Helsinki
"Should we optimize data management with quantum computing?"
🙋♀️ Tomas Fernández Bouvier (People’s choice award) – University of Helsinki
"Heat, cannons and computers"
Daria Anttila – University of Turku
"Missing puzzle in quantum education research - students’ views"
Santeri Neuvonen – University of Jyväskylä
"Fluorescence energy transfer between molecules"
Isak Björkman – Aalto University
"Landau-Zener driven 02-transition in a transmon circuit"
Lassi Lehtisyrjä – VTT & Aalto University
"Industrial scale quantum components through tunnel junction building blocks"
Maryam Darvishi – University of Jyväskylä
"Supercurrent Diodes in Disordered Quantum Materials"
The competition was hosted by Aalto University Academic Coordinator Bernadette Gehl-Väisänen. The judges for the competition were Aalto University Academy Research Fellow Alexander Zyuzin, University of Helsinki Postdoctoral Researcher Cecilia Chiaracane, and Aalto University Academy Research Fellow Robert Drost.
A concept first developed by the University of Queensland, this competition challenges doctoral students to synthesize their research topics into concise presentations. Finalists are judged on the clarity of their presentation, clear communication about their research motivation, and multiple other metrics.
Congratulations to all that were involved in the competition! See the video presentations of our winner, runner-up, and people's choice award here:
