The InstituteQ Chair of Excellence programme brings internationally leading researchers into Finland’s national quantum ecosystem to strengthen scientific leadership and initiate new directions in quantum science and technology.

The chair of excellence program is designed to host international leading experts and eminent scholars at one of the host organizations at InstituteQ for a three-year term, and a cumulative commitment of 9–12 months. The chairs are expected to strengthen key scientific areas where InstituteQ already holds significant visibility and also to foster expertise and excellence in emerging areas. Appointed chairs are expected to collaborate with InstituteQ research groups, present their work at InstituteQ colloquia, and deliver a lecture (either individually or as a guest lecturer) during their stay.

Application deadline: March 31, 2026

Appointment period: 2026-2028 (start no earlier than May 1, 2026)

Commitment: 9-12 months total over three years

Professor Sergey Kubatkin’s Chair of Excellence (2024–2026) focuses on understanding and mitigating decoherence in solid-state quantum devices and advancing quantum transport in two-dimensional materials, strengthening InstituteQ’s research on materials, coherence, and quantum sensing.

Professors Simon Devitt & Charles Marcus | Chair of Excellence call No. 1

Professors Charles Marcus and Simon Devitt’s Chairs of Excellence (2023–2025) strengthened InstituteQ’s leadership in superconducting quantum devices, materials and coherence, and quantum computing theory, software and information, and error correction.
